A major milestone has been reached in one of the most complex and time-critical repair operations ever undertaken by Uisce Éireann, as crews make strong progress on critical repairs to the Ballymore Eustace to Saggart watermain.
Since late yesterday, specialist crews have been working through a tightly controlled repair window on the 26km pipeline, which supplies drinking water to approximately 1.7 million people across Dublin, Kildare and parts of Wicklow every day.
Water supplies continue to be maintained across the region, with the extensive planning completed ahead of the works helping to protect supplies and avoid disruption wherever possible.
Overnight, teams successfully exposed the damaged section of pipeline and heavy-lift cranes removed the deteriorated pipe section, clearing the way for the next critical phase of the operation. Crews are now preparing to install the replacement pipe section and reconnect one of the most important water supply pipelines in the country.
The repair programme includes replacing one damaged section of pipe and repairing 15 leaks along the watermain. Work is taking place simultaneously across multiple locations, with specialist teams progressing repairs and preparing to return the pipeline to service.
Nicola Butler, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: "Over the Bank Holiday weekend, hundreds of people are working in challenging conditions behind the scenes to protect water supplies for homes, businesses, schools, hospitals and essential services across Dublin, Kildare and parts of Wicklow.
The progress made overnight is a testament to the planning, expertise and commitment of the teams involved. With the damaged pipe section now removed, our focus is on completing the next stages of the operation safely and returning the pipeline to service as planned."
