Stronger water supply secured for Lismore as significant upgrade completed

Uisce Éireann has successfully completed a significant upgrade to Lismore’s water network, marking the end of an extensive Leakage Reduction Programme project that has replaced almost 3km of ageing and vulnerable watermains across the town. The final phase of works has now been commissioned, securing long-term improvements by significantly reducing leakage and providing a stronger, more reliable water supply for homes and businesses throughout Lismore.

This essential investment focused on replacing older sections of the network along Deerpark Road and Lismore Bridge, where frequent bursts and high leakage had been impacting customers in the area. These improvements will help reduce the frequency of bursts, minimise future disruptions, and provide a more secure water supply for the local community.

Dave Murphy, Portfolio Manager at Uisce Éireann, said: “We are delighted to bring this significant project in Lismore to completion. By replacing older, at-risk watermains, we are significantly reducing leakage and helping to protect treated drinking water from being lost. Most importantly, this means a safer, more reliable water supply for homes and businesses across the town. We would like to sincerely thank the Lismore community for their patience and continued support while these essential works were delivered.”

This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann is working to reduce leaks every day. Fixing leaks can be complex. Ireland has over 65,000 km of water pipes underground – enough to circle the earth one and a half times. Most leaks aren’t visible, resulting in treated water being lost, but progress is being made. Leakage levels are now at their lowest ever, with water loss reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.

As Uisce Éireann continues to invest in Lismore’s water infrastructure, a planning application has recently been submitted for additional water storage to further strengthen the resilience of the water supply and support future growth in the area.

Uisce Éireann is responsible for delivering public drinking water and wastewater services for the people of Ireland. We are committed to enabling communities to thrive by continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support sustainable growth and development, providing safe drinking water, and enhancing the environment.
