Strong progress being made on West End mains replacements

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

Within days, the excavators will come to a halt and crews will take a well-earned rest, but looking back, 2025 has been a productive year for water mains replacement in Galway City.

Uisce Éireann has made significant progress in its ongoing programme to upgrade mains to the west of the city, with the latest project at Maunsells Road and St Mary’s Park due for completion within weeks.

This programme has involved more than 1.5kms of new mains being laid along Maunsells Road and Taylor’s Hill, as well as in St Mary’s Park. Full reinstatement of these roads will take place early in the new year.

These upgrades will ensure a more secure and reliable water supply for residents and businesses in the area and will significantly reduce the risk of operational issues on the network going forward.

Uisce Éireann acknowledges that these works have caused some disruption in the area, particularly as a result of the traffic management required for the works to be carried out safely. We wish to thank impacted customers for their continued understanding as we carry out the final tasks.

Meanwhile, Phase 1 of the St Mary’s Road project has seen more than 1.3km of mains replaced in the West End of the city so far in 2025. These have included mains replacements in Raleigh Row and Palmyra Park, which have been undertaken to improve water quality for Uisce Éireann customers in the area and reduce levels of leakage on the network.

Enda Mac Namara of Uisce Éireann said that good progress is being made on these critical upgrades to Galway’s water mains.

“We are progressing on schedule with these significant works to the west of Galway city and are delivering on our commitment to provide for our customers,” said Enda. “We want to thank the residents and businesses who have been impacted by these works for their patience and cooperation to date.”

The next phase of works in the West End is planned for early in the new year.  This phase, involving approximately 240m of mains replacement, will take place in William Street West and Dominic Street Upper and will be carried out in January and February.

The works are being carried out by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

The Uisce Éireann Customer Contact Centre, open 24/7 on freephone 1800 278 278, is available to answer any queries on any of Uisce Éireann’s mains replacement works in Galway.
