New Dunhill to Ballyvadden watermain strengthens capacity and future proofs supply for Waterford communities
Uisce Éireann is pleased to announce the completion of a major upgrade to the drinking water network between Dunhill and Ballyvadden, delivering a more secure, reliable and resilient water supply for communities across the Waterford coast, including Ballylaneen, Bunmahon, Kill and Annestown. This investment underpins everyday life in the community, helping households, local businesses and vital services that depend on a clean, reliable water supply, day in and day out.
The existing drinking water infrastructure serving these areas was not sufficient to meet demand and could be prone to restrictions that impacted the local communities. This important rationalisation project replaces ageing water infrastructure with a more modern and dependable network that better meets the day to day needs of communities along the Waterford coast.
The project involved constructing a new 7.6km rising watermain linking Dunhill to the Ballyvadden Reservoir, providing a direct and dependable connection to the robust supply from the Sporthouse Reservoir. This investment addresses ongoing operational challenges at the old Ballylaneen Water Treatment Plant and ensures the network has the resilience and capacity required to support homes and businesses into the future.
Speaking about the completion of the works, Laura Heneghan, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, said: “This project represents a significant step forward for communities along the Waterford coast. By connecting these areas to a modern and reliable water source, we are ensuring a secure supply that supports homes, businesses and future development. We would like to thank the local community for their patience and cooperation as we delivered these essential upgrades.”
The works also included the installation of a new booster pump at Dunhill and the delivery of a high capacity watermain designed to meet both current and future demand. Mallwood Ltd carried out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
This project forms part of Uisce Éireann’s wider national programme of strategic water supply rationalisation, which is strengthening regional networks, enhancing resilience and ensuring communities are served by modern, reliable infrastructure capable of supporting sustainable growth.
Uisce Éireann is responsible for delivering public drinking water and wastewater services for the people of Ireland. We are committed to enabling communities to thrive by continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support sustainable growth and development, providing safe drinking water, and enhancing the environment.
