Major wastewater upgrade completed ahead of schedule to support Celbridge’s growing community

€8.5 million investment strengthens wastewater infrastructure and enables future housing delivery

Uisce Éireann is pleased to announce the completion of the Crodaun Wastewater Network Upgrade, a major investment in wastewater infrastructure that will support future growth and development in Celbridge while strengthening services for existing customers.

Delivered as part of our national Growth and Development Programme, the €8.5 million project involved the installation of more than 2km of new wastewater pipeline between the existing Castletown Wastewater Pumping Station and the Crodaun area of Celbridge. The upgrade provides the wastewater capacity required to enable the delivery of over 900 new homes in the area, helping to address housing needs while supporting sustainable growth.

The completed project will also improve the performance and resilience of the existing wastewater network, reducing the risk of sewer overflows and ensuring the infrastructure can meet the needs of a growing community for years to come.

Welcoming the project's completion, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, said:

“This project which will support the development of much needed homes in Kildare. Continued investment in wastewater infrastructure is essential to facilitating housing delivery, and to the overall development of towns and cities throughout Ireland. The increased funding that we have allocated to Uisce Éireann will accelerate the delivery of the necessary infrastructure to support the development of new homes across the country as reflected in our Housing Action Plan.”

Speaking on behalf of Uisce Éireann, Ciaran Ryan said:

"This project is a significant investment in Celbridge's future. By increasing wastewater capacity now, we're helping to unlock the delivery of new homes while also improving the resilience and performance of the network that serves existing customers.

"We know that that this project was disruptive at times and we'd like to thank local residents, businesses and road users for their patience and cooperation throughout the works. The long-term benefits of this upgrade will support the community for many years to come."

The Crodaun Wastewater Network Upgrade forms part of a wider programme of investment across Kildare to enable housing and provide the infrastructure needed for thriving communities. Through our Growth and Development Programme, Uisce Éireann continues to invest in strategically important wastewater projects throughout the county.

The project was delivered on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Coffey Construction. While the main construction works have now been completed, permanent road reinstatement works will take place next year. We will provide advance notice to residents, businesses and road users ahead of these works.

Previous Updates

Works have commenced this month on the Crodaun Wastewater Network Upgrade, an important project that will significantly enhance wastewater capacity and support future growth and development in Celbridge. Delivered as part of Uisce Éireann’s national Growth and Development Programme, and representing an investment of €8.5 million, the project will provide the required capacity to enable the potential delivery of over 900 new homes in the community. These upgrades will strengthen performance in the existing network, reduce the risk of sewer overflows and ensure the infrastructure can meet the needs of a growing community.

Welcoming the commencement of the works, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne TD said:
“The delivery of essential wastewater infrastructure is fundamental to meeting our housing targets as reflected in our new Housing Action Plan, ‘Delivering Homes, Building Communities’ and through record investment in the water sector. This project will provide critical capacity to enable new homes and serve the needs of the community.”

Speaking on behalf of Uisce Éireann, Ciaran Ryan highlighted the importance of the investment for Celbridge’s future:
“This upgrade is a key enabler for sustainable development in Celbridge. By increasing capacity in the wastewater network now, we are supporting planned residential development, strengthening the performance of the existing system and ensuring reliable services for both current and future residents. We appreciate the cooperation of the community and will work to minimise disruption as the works progress.”

The project involves installing over 2 kilometres of new wastewater pipeline between the existing Castletown Wastewater Pumping Station and Crodaun, via Castletown Estate, Castletown Drive and the R405 Maynooth Road.

To safely facilitate pipeline installation, phased lane and road closures are required. The first phase of works takes place at Castletown Drive in Celbridge. Castletown Drive, from the Main Street junction to the R405 Maynooth Road junction, is closed to public traffic until May under a rolling closure arrangement, allowing the work area to move progressively along the route. Diversion routes are clearly signposted, with access for residents of Castletown Drive maintained at all times. The site team will liaise directly with residents as works approach individual properties. Diversions follow the R405, with northbound access via a right turn into Castletown Drive and southbound access via Main Street and a left turn into Castletown Drive.

The project is being delivered on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Coffey Construction and is expected to be completed in early 2027. Uisce Éireann understands that works of this nature can be disruptive and will keep the community informed throughout the works including updates on planned traffic management. Updates on the project will be available at our Growth and Development Programme page.
