Investing in Castleblayney: an improved supply for homes and families

Homes and families in The Crescent, Castleblayney are set to benefit from a safer, more reliable water supply as Uisce Éireann begins essential upgrade works this week. The project will replace ageing backyard water mains, helping to improve water quality and reduce leakage in the area.

The works will involve the decommissioning of backyard service connections in The Crescent Estate as well as the delivery of 540 metres of new water mains constructed along the public road.

Across Ireland, Uisce Éireann continues an ambitious programme to retire ageing backyard services and replace them with modern, resilient infrastructure.

Backyard service replacements are a crucial element of our National Leakage Reduction Programme. By decommissioning these fragile backyard services and replacing them with modern, durable water mains, a significant source of hidden leakage is eliminated, and residents will enjoy a more reliable water supply.

This means more water stays in the network, pressure improves for homes and businesses, and less treated drinking water is wasted.

Uisce Éireann’s Patricia Lowry said that these mains upgrades will provide real, tangible benefits for homes and businesses in the area.

“These works will have a significant impact for our customers in Castleblayney,” said Patricia. “The upgraded mains and new connections will provide an improved quality of drinking water for homes and businesses, while increasing the reliability of our supply and helping to drive down rates of leakage on the local network.

“This project reflects Uisce Éireann’s commitment to provide safe, sustainable water services that support thriving communities,” continued Patricia.

These works in Castleblayney will be carried out by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann and are expected to be completed by Spring 2027.

Uisce Éireann has invested €2 billion to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the Leakage Reduction Programme. We are continuing this work with over €1 billion in further investment in the network by the end of 2029. Fixing leaks can be complicated but we are making progress. Leakage levels are now at their lowest ever, with water loss reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% nationally.
