Completed upgrades strengthen water supply for Ballymahon and surrounding communities

The community in Ballymahon is now benefiting from a stronger and more reliable water supply following the completion of upgrade works on the local water network along the N55, delivered by Uisce Éireann as part of its National Leakage Reduction Programme.

The completed works involved the upgrade of more than 5km of watermains along the N55 between Carrickedmond Church and Ballymahon Mart, helping to reduce leakage, minimise the risk of bursts and interruptions, and strengthen the reliability of the local water network for homes and businesses in the area.

Speaking about the completion of the works, Dave Murphy, Portfolio Manager with Uisce Éireann’s Leakage Reduction Programme, said the project represents an important investment in Ballymahon’s water infrastructure. “By upgrading sections of ageing watermains along the N55, we are strengthening the network and reducing the risk of disruption for local homes and businesses. These works form part of our ongoing programme to deliver a more reliable and resilient water supply for communities, and we would like to thank residents, businesses and road users for their patience and cooperation while the works were carried out.”

The works were delivered on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Ward & Burke Construction, working in close partnership with Longford County Council. Engagement with residents, businesses and stakeholders took place throughout the project to help manage impacts and keep the community informed as works progressed.

This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann works every day to reduce leaks. With more than 65,000 km of underground pipes nationally- enough to circle the earth one and a half times - fixing leaks can be complicated. Many are hidden, but we are making progress: National leakage is now at its lowest level ever, reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.
