Collooney community to benefit from upgrades

Essential water main replacement works are set to commence in Collooney, as part of its ongoing commitment to improving water services for homes and businesses across Co Sligo.

Uisce Éireann is set to commence essential water main replacement works in Collooney, as part of its ongoing commitment to improving water services for homes and businesses across Co Sligo. The works, which will get underway in the coming weeks, will deliver a more reliable water supply and enhance overall water quality for the local community.

The project involves replacing more than 740 metres of ageing cast iron water mains with modern, robust pipes. Works will take place along the L7609/L76093, from the Collooney Methodist Church to Markee Heights and along the L7609 from Bungee Row to St. Mary’s Green.

As part of the project, crews will also install new water service connections from the public main to customers’ property boundaries.

This project in Co Sligo marks another significant step forward under Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme, which aims to safeguard water resources and strengthen water infrastructure nationwide.

Uisce Éireann’s Programme Manager, Patricia Lowry, welcomed the commencement of the works, saying: “This project is a really positive development for the Collooney community. By replacing these older water mains, we are ensuring that customers benefit from a more resilient water supply. These upgrades also mean fewer bursts, reduced disruption, and improved water quality for everyone who depends on the network. I want to thank the community for their cooperation and understanding as these essential works take place over the coming months.”

Farrans Construction is delivering the project on behalf of Uisce Éireann and it is expected to be completed by Summer 2026.

Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise the impact to customers. A one-way traffic management system will be in place for the works on the L7609 / L76093 (Collooney Methodist Church to Markee Heights) section, followed by a road closure along the L7609 Bungee Row/St. Mary’s Green to facilitate works in this section. Local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times.

The works may also involve some short-term interruptions to the water supply for nearby customers. The project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours' notice prior to any planned interruption.

The Uisce Éireann Customer Contact Centre, open 24/7 on freephone 1800 278 278, is available to answer any queries.
