Laying the foundations for Sligo's future growth
New water mains will increase capacity, strengthen the network and support housing delivery across Sligo Town
Uisce Éireann will begin work this month on an important upgrade to the water network in Sligo Town, helping to ensure the area has the infrastructure needed to support future homes, businesses, and community development.
The project will see more than 800 metres of new water mains installed along the Western Distributor Road. Once complete, the upgrade will strengthen the local water network and help ensure it can meet the needs of the town as it grows in the years ahead.
Uisce Éireann’s Programme Manager Patricia Lowry explained: "This investment will strengthen the water network in Sligo Town and help ensure there is sufficient capacity to support future housing and development in the area. By delivering this infrastructure now, we are helping to prepare Sligo for future growth while continuing to provide reliable water services for existing homes and businesses.”
The project is being delivered as part of Uisce Éireann's Accelerated Growth Programme, a targeted investment programme designed to provide the additional water and wastewater capacity needed to support housing and sustainable development in communities across Ireland.
Works will be carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Farrans and are expected to be completed in winter 2026.
To facilitate the works, temporary traffic lights will be in place at locations along the route. Local and emergency access will be maintained at all times, and work areas will be kept as short as possible to help minimise disruption.
