Galway City East and West - Housing for All

Uisce Éireann is upgrading the water infrastructure in Galway city to support future growth and development in the city, including the development of new housing.

The works are being carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Ward and Burke and Coffeys Construction Limited.

The project involves the installation of new water mains and the upgrading of key infrastructure at multiple locations around Galway city which have been identified for future residential development.

To minimise disruption for residents, businesses, road users and the local community, the project is being delivered in phases.

Work phases:

• Ballyloughane Road: Approximately 680 metres of new mains will be installed along the Ballyloughane Road, from the Old Dublin Road junction to the Galway-Dublin railway line bridge. Commenced in September 2026.
• Doughiska Road: Approximately 800 metres of new mains will be laid on the Doughiska Road, from the junction with the Monivea Road to the turn-off for Fearann Rí estate. Due to commence late-2026.
• Ballybane Pumping Station Upgrade: The existing Ballybane Pumping Station will be upgraded. This will improve the capacity, reliability, and operational performance of the pumping station. Due to commence late-2026.

Further work phases will be added here as the project develops through 2027 and 2028.

These critical upgrades are being delivered through Uisce Éireann’s Growth and Development Programme, a national programme of targeted investment to increase the capacity of water and wastewater infrastructure to enable social and economic growth and development, including the delivery of essential housing.

The benefits of these water network works include:

• Delivering vital water infrastructure needed to support the development of houses and apartments in areas of Galway city earmarked for future development.
• Further strengthening the existing water infrastructure and network to improve supply for customers and communities.
   

To deliver these water network upgrade works safely and efficiently, some traffic management will be required. Impacted stakeholders will be notified directly and we endeavour to keep the local community updated as this project progresses. Local and emergency traffic will always be maintained. 

The works may also involve some short-term water interruptions, and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions.

We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.
